Pet Hamster Obituary

Baloo, the household hamster, was found dead this morning in his three bedroom cage. He died with a row of peanuts ad grapes b his side, eating what he enjoyed right up until the end.
For many this will come as a shock, however for some it will not. Those who knew him personally will tell you of he constant enthusiasm he showed in everything and anything he was involved in. This excitement could become too much as he often found himself going into uncontrollable frenzies therefore is sudden death was somewhat inevitable. After being born and named after the great bear himself, Baloo from the Jungle Book, he was brought into a caring and loving family. Many outsiders my view his death as a result of the sheer pressure that came with this great name, as he was unable to follow the footsteps of such a creature.

He often spoke easily and indeed freely of his name making it very clear that he understood its origins. Ultimatly however it was is own self doubt and the pressure of society that drove or young hamster into the abyss. But we must not be sad, we must celebrate the eventful life that he endured and say ‘God bless my friend’.

Marilyn Monroe-Biograpy

Marilyn Monroe was born as Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926 in Los Angeles, California. During her brief life, Marilyn Monroe overcame a difficult childhood to become one of the world’s biggest and most enduring sex symbols. During her career, Monroe’s films grossed more than $200 million. Monroe died of a drug overdose on August 5, 1962, at only 36 years old.

Monroe was born into a troubled early life. She never knew her father and Monroe’s mother, Gladys, developed psychiatric problems and was eventually placed in a mental institution. As an adult, Monroe often mentioned one of her earliest memories of her mother trying to smother her in her crib with a pillow. Monroe had a half-sister, who she was not close to. Monroe spent much of her time in foster care and in an orphanage. In 1937, a family friend and her husband, Grace and Doc Goddard, took care of Monroe for a few years. The Goddard’s were paid $25 weekly by Monroe’s mother to raise her. The couple was deeply religious and followed fundamentalist doctrines; among other prohibited activities, Monroe was not allowed to go to the movies. But when Doc’s job was transferred in 1942 to the East Coast, the couple could not afford to bring Monroe with them.

At 7 years old, Monroe returned to a life in foster homes, where she was on several occasions sexually assaulted and later saying that she had been raped when she was 11 years old. But she had one way out—get married. She married her boyfriend Jimmy Dougherty on June 19, 1942, at the age of 16. By that time, Monroe had dropped out of high school (age 15). A merchant marine, Dougherty was later sent to the South Pacific. Monroe went to work in a munitions factory in Van Nuys, California, where she was discovered by a photographer. By the time Dougherty returned in 1946, Monroe had a successful career as a model, and had changed her name to Marilyn Monroe in preparation for an acting career. This isolated childhood created the world famous and iconic symbol that was Marilyn Monroe.  The couple divorced in 1946, the same year that Monroe signed her first movie contract. With the movie contract came a new name and image; she began calling herself “Marilyn Monroe” and dyed her hair blonde. Throughout her short professional career she was involved in various successful films and TV programs, the most famous being ‘Some like it Hot’. However, especially towards the end of her career, she was often late or didn’t show up to filming through illness which could have been an indication to the internal troubles she was undergoing. She also had a  string of unsuccessful marriages and relationships. Her 1954 marriage to baseball great Joe DiMaggio only lasted nine months.

On August 5, 1962, at only 36 years old, Marilyn Monroe died at her Los Angeles home. An empty bottle of sleeping pills was found by her bed. There has been some speculation over the years that she may have been murdered, but the cause of her death was officially ruled as a drug overdose. There have been rumors that Monroe was involved with President John F. Kennedy and/or his brother Robert around the time of her death, causing yet further controversy.

Shaun White and the Sochi Olympics

Games medals in snowboarding and skateboarding, and the lead guitarist in an LA based rock band. He is the CEO of his own company, and the face of many others. Shaun has amassed numerous titles and victories, most notably gold medalling in both the 2006 & 2010 Winter Olympics. He holds the X Games records for gold medals with 15 and the highest overall medal count with 23 to date. He also has won 10 ESPY awards for Best Male Action Sports Athlete and Best Male US Olympic Athlete.

Going into the Sochi Winter Olympics White was expecting to finish on the top three podium. During the games however he finished well below his usual standards. White’s final run was uncharacteristically sloppy, without a complete fall but with multiple bobbles, and received a score of 90.25, an improvement of his first run in which he fell twice, but only good enough for fourth place. White had been trying to become the first American man to win the same winter event in three consecutive Games.

Shaun White competes during the men's halfpipe snowboarding qualification of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park. (Guy Rhodes-USA TODAY Sports) Never before in an Olympics had White faced this sort of pressure. And he slid along the base of the course late Tuesday believing he could have done more.

Consequently White pulled out of the slope style competition less than 24 hours before qualifying rounds, prompting rivals to suggest White may have been scared to lose. White withdrew from the event too late for the United States to replace him.

Should Hansard be edited?

Dear Naz Shah,

The controversial Hansard has recently come up in my A-level English language lessons and throughout this essay I will give my thoughts and opinions on the matter. The recorded words spoken in every court or official debate is called Hansard and the accounts are recorded in ‘edited verbatim’. The term itself is extremely confusing as verbatim means the exact words spoken however, how can the accounts be exact if they have been modified? Aside from this we are left with the question should Hansard be edited or just simply left in its basic condition?

Firstly I believe that Hansard should be left in its original state as pauses for example, that would not be recorded in the accounts, are sometimes vital components of what the person is saying and therefore the reader may miss the overall meaning of the words. For example the speaker may pause for emphasis however this would become completely lost in the Hansard account. This is why I believe that Hansard should not be edited as by removing even the smallest of pauses or words the meaning can be completely changed.

Also Hansard removes fillers from its work  such as (erm and like) which may cause the false presumption that the speaker is well spoken with no fillers or pauses which may also suggest that they are confident when in actual fact they are not. This might be an extremely important factor that is not picked up it the Hansard account and could play a significant role in the verdict of what the person said.imagevaulthandler-aspx

However I can understand the need for removing fillers as, in the demanding society that we live in, there is no time for reading ‘unnecessary’ words. Editing also removes spoken mistakes such as ones made and then repeated which again removes time consuming errors that can be ‘cut out’. This works providing that the eliminated text has little or no significance which it rarely does.

Thirdly, some might say that if the piece was recorded ‘word for word’ then other factors such as accents and speech pattern must also be taken into consideration. In doing this it would make the account almost impossible to read and comprehend which could affect the meaning taken away from what was actually said.

Finally, some people might argue that some of the recorded and edited text may have been adapted to go against the speaker. For example the meaning of what was said could have been lost or changed when under edit and could be used against the person as false evidence. Thus, some people believe that the whole speech should be recorded and so every word that was said is available for viewing.

To conclude I believe that Hansard should not be edited as in such sensitive subjects as courts and debates the full spoken record should be available and not be left to an editor to decide what is important and what is not. Although the idea of removing unwanted text seems appropriate, it is almost impossible for an editor to make the decisions without removing some useful text or pauses and so I believe that Hansard should not be edited.

Why I chose A-level English

I decided to chose English at A level because I wanted to improve my writing skills and learn more about the English language. Also I believe that the subject will go hand in hand with my other A-level choices including history for which a lot of writing skills are required. englishHaving enjoyed the subject in my previous years at St Bedes it wasn’t a tough decision. I believe that it will not only aid me in my current studies, but also in my later life. Lastly I enjoy reading so English language will enable me to continue this at a much higher standard.
