LangLit: Report to MP on Hansard

imagevaulthandler-aspxHansard is the official report of what goes on in the Houses of Parliament (and any Parliamentary Committees. It describes itself as the “edited verbatim” account: “verbatim” means ‘in exactly the same words as were used originally’; “edited” means ‘prepared for publication by correcting, condensing or otherwise modifying it’.

Using our knowledge of spoken language and transcripts, we have noticed that Hansard is edited heavily and may not be “verbatim”. Write a report to your MP about Hansard’s reporting and editing policy.

Your report should be broken down into the following sections.

1.How do you know the Hansard report isn’t exactly what was said? Use some key words.

2.Reasons you think Hansard should edit its entries. Evaluate (some of) those reasons, giving your opinion and explaining why you think that.

3.Reasons why you think Hansard should not edit its entries. Evaluate (some of) those reasons, giving your opinion and explaining why you think that.

4.Your conclusion. Explain what you think Hansard should do in future, briefly stating why.

Once you have written your report, post it as a blog here. Your blog should have:

  • A suitable title.
  • A suitable picture.
  • Make use of *categories* and *tags*.

DO NOT SHARE ANY CONTACT INFORMATION, INCLUDING YOUR FULL NAME, ON THIS BLOG.

To find out who your MP is, go to Parliament’s website.
